Stiff competition in NRM Workers League Elections

All is set for the explosive 2020 National Resistance Movement (NRM) Workers League elections slated for July with three candidates vying for the National Chairman position.
Former Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) General Secretary Mr James Tweheyo, Uganda Media Union (UMU) Chairman Mr Bosco Onyik and National Union of Theatrical, Domestic and General Workers Union General Secretary Mr Ezra Kanyana, are in the race for Chairman. The outgoing Chairman is Mr James Tweheyo. The campaigns for the top leadership of the Workers League started way back late 2019 with various activities including seminars, workshops, national events and campaigns at trade union events.
Aspiring candidates have concentrated on promoting themselves with flyers and posters distributed widely on social media workers platforms. But before and after the Uganda Electoral Commission declared Scientific campaigns and elections it became prudent that the social media forums would be one of the main platforms for campaigns. Candidates vying for various positions in the Workers League leadership started bombarding members with their rhetoric that includes text messages, flyers, posters and photographs even before the Covid-19 pandemic was reported in Uganda. The social media platforms used by the workers are NRM Workers League, Labour Together Platform:, Workers Media Center, National Workers Platform, Equal Opportunity Group, Workers Platform 2017 and NOTU Think Tank.
Mr Bosco Onyik under his campaign slogan “ the Perfect Balance” says he is committed to serving members of the Workers League diligently and to the best of their satisfaction. Mr Onyik, who is the immediate former Chairman at National Council of Sports (NCS), said with vast experience in administration he has great potential for defending and promoting workers’ rights..
“ I have vast experience in administration and great potential for defending and promoting workers’ rights to greater heights,” he said. National Union of Theatrical, Domestic and General Workers Union General Secretary Mr Ezra Kanyana said he has the ability to serve the NRM Workers League members effienctly.
He said he would concentrate on creating employment opportunities for the worker and their capacity for productivity in both public and private sector.“ I will concentrate on creating employment opportunities for the workers and their capacity for productivity in both public and private sector Former Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) General Secretary Mr James Tweheyo told the Workers Eye that he was instrumental in building capacity for the workers in negotiations, recruitments and administration.
He said as Chairman for the NRM Workers League he ensured there was cordial relationship between the Executive and the workers structures from the lower to the highest levels which enhanced dialogue. Mr Tweheyo said as Chairman NRM Workers league he convinced the Executive on a number of pertinent issues that benefit the workers in the country, but hastened to add that his role has yield heavy dividends.
He said: “ I created a SACCO for Ugandan walimu or teachers and ensured it was funded to the tune of Ushs 25 billion,” he said. The Trade unionist whose name became a “Trade Mark” for UNATU , until after 2018, was instrumental in the bill that created Workers Councilors’ slots , among many other pertinent establishments for workers. Mr James Tweheyo said he ensured the plight of teachers was addressed by the government and now and then he was part of the Public Service Negotiating Machinery that took care of the welfare of teachers.
