Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has dismissed wide spread  talk  that he is grooming First Son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba  to take over from him as successor when he retires..

Speculation has been rife in the country  following  the President’s rapid promotion of his son from lower positions to the rank of  Lt. Gen with duties of Commander Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) and Presidential Adviser on Security.

“Why should I groom my son?. The people of Uganda are there to decide.. They will select whom they want,” he said on September 7, 2021 during an interview with France 24’s Journalist Mr Marc Perelman.

He said: “This is not a theatre for acting scene 1, scene 2 . This is a struggle for the destiny of people of Uganda and  Africa,”.

Mr Museveni recently responded  to critics  that accuse him of rapidly promoting his son through the army ranks, adding that the ranks go with the levels of training..

There has been growing interest by supporters especially on social media, with  fans of the 47-year-old UPDF Commander of Land Forces, Lt Gen Muhoozi, creating and disseminating promotional messages dubbed “ MK2026”.

They have decided to choose in advance what they perceive as the “Muhoozi project”, President in waiting hence @mkainerugaba as their next president #MK2026

But despite the President downplaying the “ Muhoozi 2026 Project” Political observers believe the President is silently grooming his son since he has failed to secure  a  reliable successor.

He said: “ We cannot decide for the people of Uganda. When the time comes the people will decide whom they want as President.”

However some National Resistance Movement (NRM) founding members feel betrayed by Mr Museveni on their  bush – war gentleman’s agreement on succession plans for Uganda’s Presidency. Some members fell out with the President and joined opposition groups while others have since passed on dejected and disgruntled.

Mr Museveni told France 24 that opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) led by Hon Robert Kyagulanyi alias  “Bobi Wine”, started as internal actors but got recruited into external forces  which led to their failure.

The Ugandan  leader  castigated Guinea military leaders who toppled President Alpha Conde- on September 5, 2021 , adding that the junta should  hand over power because they are not part of the solutions to that country.

“We  have had coups since the 1960s and they were part and parcel of Africa’s problems. Today we do not accept the idea of coups,” he said..

There is every reason for Ugandans or anyone else  to suspect that Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is being slowly groomed into top leadership as he welds power within armed forces’ ranks.

President Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986 after fighting a five – year protracted war against the governments  of President Apollo Milton Obote and Gen Tito Okello Lutwa■
