AMERICAN EMBASSY ACCUSED OFSPREADING UNFOUNDED PANIC

BY JAMES WAFULAIN NAIROBI.

The NGO council of Kenya has taken issue with the latest travel advisory from the US embassy in Nairobi urging its citizens not to travel out of the  city and avoid Kisumu county over “credible fears” of  election related violence ahead of polls next Tuesday.Addressing a media briefing on state of election preparedness at the Nairobi head office, council chairman Stephen Kipchumba Cheboi said the embassy had issued directives based on “outdated and misleading” insecurity profiling.Cheboi said the embassy advisory did not reflect the reality on the ground saying the so called “hotspots” like Kisumu had remained peaceful as voters now enjoy cordial ties with security personnel.”The US embassy is clearly misinformed as Kisumu being the political stronghold of state backed Azmio candidate Raila Odinga has no reason to clash with security personnel as in the past 2013-2017 elections.”He said the embassy should revise its “security radar profiles” and avoid issuing blanket statements that only help to spread panic on unfounded grounds.”We are confident Kenyans will avoid violence at all costs and are ready to participate in free, fair, and peaceful elections. We are urging wananchi as we have done the whole year to accept the verdict of the IEBC when the winner is finally declared provided the elections remain free fair and verifiable,” he said.
