Message from Uganda Professional Science Teachers\u2019 Union (UPSTU)<\/strong> 5th<\/sup> October, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greetings to you all the teachers across the country and to you dear friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today the 5th October, 2022, we join the rest of the world to celebrate the world Teachers’ Day. A day, internationally earmarked annually to honor the gifted souls who work every day to secure a bright future for our children and our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teachers are the light of the world, the beacons in the dark and the hope that gives the nation strength through inspiring, mentoring, guiding and educating the young generations. Such are the kind of persons we are celebrating today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world teachers\u2019 day theme for this this year as presented by UNESCO is \u201cTransformation of education begins with Teachers\u201d. This is a well thought and suitable theme of the day because it highlights the critical role and the value of teachers in building quality education systems to provide quality and transformative education services which is very key in factor in national development. It also connotatively underscores the urgent need of quality teachers more so as we continue to advance the post COVID-19 education recovery agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It is very important to note that quality teachers are very key factors in ensuring quality education in any country of the world. We  therefore, appeal to government and other education management stakeholders to ensure that our teachers are well empowered, adequately recruited, well remunerated and motivated or supported within a well-resourced, efficient and governed system.  This obviously calls upon government to make more deliberate effort in improving the quality of teachers starting with upping the grade and quality of education systems that produce these teachers to the improvement of the teachers\u2019 welfare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As UPSTU, we reecho the call by all teachers internationally to governments to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invest in teachers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Involve teachers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust teachers &<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a special way, allow us as UPSTU to use this beautiful occasion to convey our heartfelt gratitude to our dear President, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the government of Uganda for honoring the presidential pledge of enhancing salaries of science teachers alongside other scientists. Effecting the pay enhancement for scientists in FY2022\/2023 to start with, has gone a long way to improve on the general welfare of workers and improved on the quality of lives for all and science teachers in particular. This will obviously in the long run impact on the general quality of education in our country, for a \u201cquality teacher is always at the center of quality education\u201d, no doubt about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact by the brave decision taken by government to enhance pay for science teachers alongside other scientists is already visible as was seen in the innovative projects presented by our students in S.1 and S.2 under new lower secondary curriculum across the country in the recent national science fair exhibitions held at Kololo Ceremonial grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We noted that the headteachers and Deputies who are scientists were omitted in the pay enhancement FY2022\/2023, yet their counterparts who head PTCs, NTCs and TVET Institutions were considered. We have been engaging different stakeholders over this matter and we call upon MoPS, MoES & MoFPED to resolve this matter soonest. We also call upon the government and the President to expedite the plan to enhance pay for our colleague teachers who teach humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UPSTU MEMBERS\u2019 SACCO: As UPSTU we believe that developing ability among science teachers to control capital will give them power to rise above poverty that has tormented the teaching fraternity for quite long. To develop this ability, we started a SACCO for science teachers called UPSTU MEMBERS SACCO, it will act as a vehicle that will lead science teachers to financial independence. We now take the singular honor to introduce this SACCO to our members, the science teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We call upon all science teachers across the country to sign up and become members of this mighty SACCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
