{"id":3581,"date":"2017-08-17T12:26:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T12:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugandajournalistsunion.com\/wp\/?p=3581"},"modified":"2026-07-05T17:08:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T17:08:16","slug":"icc-launch-access-to-justice-project-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugandajournalistsunion.com\/wp\/2017\/08\/17\/icc-launch-access-to-justice-project-in-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"ICC launch access to justice project in Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Sumayya Nanfuka<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Registrar of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mr Herman von Hebel, and Danish Ambassador in Uganda H.E Mr Mogens Pedersen, launched an &#8220;Access to Justice&#8221; project on July 17, 2017 in Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Objectives of the project include among others facilitating the ICC&#8217;s continuous efforts to respond to the information demands of the communities affected by the conflict in northern Uganda which suffered insurgency by the Lord&#8217;s Resistance Army (LRA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Project, funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) through a grant of 210,000 euros, will enhance the capacity of the local population in Northern Uganda, where the crimes were allegedly committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will help locals to follow the proceedings against LRA&#8217;s former Commander Dominic Ongwen in the trial currently ongoing at the Hague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will also strengthen capacity of the religious and cultural leaders to further engage the members of their respective communities on issues related to the Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">International Criminal Court Registrar Mr von Hebel said inauguration of the Project comes as a response to an enormous amount of interests showed by victims, communities, and other stakeholders, following proceedings of the Dominic Ongwen trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said It is the ICC&#8217;s purpose to transform local interests into popular participation and ownership of the processes that helps to strengthen local confidence in the Court&#8217;s work, justice and accountability in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is our profound confidence that this project will help us bring the ICC courtrooms to every single member of the affected community,&#8221; He said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Danish Ambassador to Uganda H.E Mogens Pedersen said their support to the ICC project is significant because it coincides with the International Day of Justice that falls on July 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the project brings justice closer to the people who have suffered violence for more than two decades and who want to see justice done and those responsible for atrocities held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are optimistic activities that will be implemented by the ICC under this project will make international justice more accessible and relevant to the communities affected by war in northern Uganda,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ICC Field Office in Kampala will, under this project, provide video screening equipment at 23 locations where Dominic Ongwen is alleged to have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is anticipated the office shall create and maintain interactive radio programmes and listening clubs through which the affected population can follow and discuss the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The office will also facilitate travels for cultural and religious leaders as well as journalists to attend trial proceedings at the seat of the Court at the Hague, and facilitate sharing those leaders&#8217; experiences related to the trial proceedings with affected communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is available an ICC copyright free broadcast quality footage plus a copyright free broadcast quality voice over News Format video, both specifically prepared for media usage.
